Congratulations to John F Hunt Limited who have won Project of the Year by a Specialist Contractor (Subcontract Over 5M) for works completed at HS2 Euston.
Construction News wrote that; “John F Hunt demonstrated strength and expertise on a high-risk and extremely challenging project for HS2 near Euston Station in London. The firm was engaged by the Costain Skanska joint venture for the demolition of three structures, ranging from seven to nine storeys, as part of an £18.1m contract.
Challenges included the presence of asbestos in one structure and the site’s close proximity to highly sensitive receptors – including the Magic Circle building, a listed station building and a party wall with the Grade I Royal College of General Practitioners, John F Hunt planned a full “cut and lift” demolition to prevent any release of asbestos fibres from Walkden House, essentially treating the entire structure as an asbestos-removal project with no preclusive breaking.
A total of 1,037 individual lifts were carried out to fully deconstruct the building for removal as special contaminated waste. To demolish Wolfson House, the entire building was skeletonised, leaving the steel frame in place to support the adjoining building. A new steel frame was erected before the old one was removed to maintain support.
Our judges said John F Hunt had innovated in all areas of the project and showed “a thirst for continual improvement” They also praised the use of shipping containers to build a protective screen around the project, which fulfilled a number of sustainability drivers”
Well done to all involved!
