At John F Hunt, we’re proud of the incredible talents and passions our team members bring to the table. Today, we’re thrilled to highlight Mark, our Lead Mechanical Engineer at the Wheal Jane Mine Water Treatment Plant. Mark joined our team in September 2022, bringing a wealth of experience from his work locally in Cornwall and even from a gold mine in Greenland!
When Mark isn’t busy ensuring the smooth operation of our mechanical plant—handling everything from welding and fabrication to gearbox refurbishment—he’s diving into a truly remarkable personal project.
In April 2024, Mark discovered a hidden gem: a 1921 Aveling Porter E Type Steam Roller. This barn find, a historic Cornish machine originally supplied to Eddisons Ltd of Dorchester, spent its life building roads for local councils before being retired in 1961. After attending a few shows, it was parked in 1980, remaining untouched until Mark’s exciting acquisition.
Now, Mark, with the help of his 16-year-old son, who’s just started an apprenticeship in engineering, is dedicated to restoring this magnificent piece of history to its former glory. Together, they’re breathing new life into a machine that played a vital role in shaping Cornwall’s roads. Mark’s passion and craftsmanship for this restoration project mirror his dedication to his work with John F Hunt.
We can’t wait to see the steamroller back in action and look forward to the incredible journey Mark and his son will share. Join us in celebrating Mark’s inspiring endeavour, and stay tuned for updates on this fantastic restoration!
