Are you a student interested in a career in civil engineering? John F Hunt Engineers recently welcomed a group of enthusiastic students from Newham College, East Ham, to their Queen Mary’s University project site! Project Director Irfan Quraishi and Civil Engineer Placement Student Ibrahim Rohomon played host, providing the students with a firsthand look at what it’s like to work in the industry.
It’s time for PPE
The day kicked off with the students getting suited up in their PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) – safety first! Project Manager Glen Friel then led the group through a comprehensive site induction, ensuring they understood the project and safety protocols.
Following the induction, the students embarked on a fascinating site walk. Irfan and Ibrahim explained the project in detail, giving the students valuable insights into the real-world application of civil engineering concepts they learn in the classroom.
Practical demonstration with our engineers
But learning wasn’t just theoretical! The John F Hunt Engineers team also gave the students a practical demonstration. Using a Total Station surveying instrument, they showed the students how to set out a site – a crucial skill for any aspiring civil engineer.
The visit culminated in a well-deserved lunch, where the students could ask questions and network with the John F Hunt Engineers team. This immersive experience gave the students a unique perspective on the civil engineering industry, sparking their curiosity and potentially shaping their career aspirations.
How was the experience?
Beyond the technical aspects and the impressive equipment at John F Hunt Engineers, this experience resonated with the students on a deeper level. They left with a newfound appreciation for the impact civil engineering has on shaping the communities they live in. Perhaps one of them, inspired by this glimpse into the future, will become the next Project Director, leading the next generation on a similar journey of discovery.
