Location & Overview

One of Birmingham’s premiere shopping destinations closed in 2016 after trading for 29 years. The centre was being converted into a four-storey Primark store covering 150,000 sq ft.

Work, Challenges & Solutions

John F Hunt Concrete Cutting carried out the demolition, and major structural alteration works using remote-controlled Brokk robotic demolition, diamond saw cutting and diamond drilling techniques.

These works involved enabling temporary steel installation to support the remaining structure allowing demolition, followed by the removal of the majority of the internal slabs and walls.

Due to the works being central to a shopping precinct, alternative noise-reductive methods and full dust suppression measures were used.

Achievements

Sound-sensitive methods of working to assist the project moving forward without upsetting other local businesses.

Working through all variants of severe weather to enable the works to be completed on time and within budget.
