Let’s all
SCAFFOLDING FANS get home safely,
every day
• All fans installed on sites are to be Class C structures (Heavy duty, for protection from bricks falling further than
10 m or larger heavier items) and as such are the subject of specific design criteria.
• All fans must meet the specific needs of the site to provide the level of protection expected. They should be
suitable in width and at an angle capable of capturing and retaining any debris expelled from the working level.
• It will be expected that they shall be 6 boards width with a 3 board upstand, double boarded with an internal
membrane or ply sheeted over.
• Where fans over sail roadways an adequate distance height from the ground to the underside of the fan is to be
taken into account during the design to enable safe passage of high vehicles with no structure or protruding tubes
below 5.05m that could be struck by a passing vehicle.
• Protection should be afforded as soon as possible during the erection of the scaffold to contain any fallen
components or materials. They are not to be used to store spare scaffolding components or any other type of
material at any time.
• Debris collected on the fans must be contained on close boarded lifts level with or immediately below the fan
placement. These lifts must be accessible at all times for personnel to undertake periodic and progressive
clearance of debris.
